Unified Patent Court Overview

The introduction of a European unitary patent and associated Unified Patent Court (UPC) has been a much debated topic over the past four decades. It is now nearer to a reality as the European Union leaders have agreed on the location of a new European patent court, finalising a legislative package which will see the court have its main seat in Paris, with sub-divisions allocated to London and Munich.

Businesses operating in Europe need to ensure that they are prepared for the changes that the new system entails. Hogan Lovells has a dedicated cross-border team of legal experts who can assist businesses to anticipate and respond to those new business and legal issues. We are one of the few law firms in Europe which has the resources and expertise to advise on pan-European patent litigation strategy under the current regime and act in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in the main patent courts of Europe. The unitary patent and Unified Patent Court place a further layer of complexity on top of the current regime.
